Traffic mitigation
To accommodate the flow of traffic in heavily traveled areas during the bridge closure, INDOT made improvements and changes to lane configurations at the intersections of 82nd Street/Center Run Drive and 86th Street/Keystone Avenue.
The configuration of southbound Center Run Drive at 82nd Street allows for one left-turn lane, one left- or right-turn lane and one right-turn lane. The existing median has been removed to provide a longer storage area for left-turning motorists headed to eastbound 82nd Street. Motorists are prohibited from entering or exiting Center Run Drive on the south side of 82nd Street, which increases the flow of traffic by eliminating the signal phase for that leg of the intersection and giving that signal time to the other movements. There are many alternate drives nearby that motorists can use to access the businesses on the south side of 82nd Street between Knue Road and Castleway Drive. All drives will be accessible after the bridge reopens and the contractor places new pavement markings.
The configuration of the intersection of 86th Street and the ramp to northbound Keystone Avenue was modified to provide increased capacity along the detour route. The ramp from 86th Street to northbound Keystone Avenue changed from a single-lane ramp to a dual-lane ramp. One through lane of westbound 86th Street was converted to a right-turn lane which allows two right-turn lanes onto the ramp to northbound Keystone Avenue. The two existing northbound lanes on Keystone Avenue were shifted to the left to allow the two ramp lanes from 86th Street to enter the traffic flow without merging. The configuration will revert back to its original condition after the bridge reopens and the contractor places new pavement markings.
